If you have a lot of free time and possess an insane measure of dedication, you can construct a reasonably coherent picture - read this timeline to get the most probable theory. Also, the only character that gives any real exposition is very easy to miss if you don't know where to look for him. Unless you look at every newspaper clipping along the way, you can complete the entire game without any knowledge of the "Seven Hour War" or of what the Combine really is. Despite you having been missing and in stasis for several years between parts 1 and 2, at no point does anyone explain to you what the hell happened during that time, nor does Gordon ever ask to be filled in.
